Abrovski: Long-term agricultural strategy and new wildfire measures on the agenda
Sofia, July 2 (Hibya) - Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovski said the agricultural sector needs a long-term, predictable and stable strategy to ensure sustainable development.
During a meeting with representatives of the Bulgarian Farmers' Union, Abrovski said the sector's challenges could be addressed through consistent policies and a clear development strategy. He noted that creating stable conditions for agricultural production would help producers plan their investments and activities more sustainably.
The meeting covered producer cooperatives, labor shortages, the lack of qualified personnel, the development of risk management tools, water resource management, improvements to irrigation infrastructure, and encouraging young people to enter the agricultural sector.
Abrovski also announced that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food would introduce new preventive measures in response to the increased wildfire risk during the summer months.
Speaking at a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting, Abrovski said the measures were designed to protect agricultural land and forested areas.
Accordingly, mowing activities will be prohibited during the hottest hours of the day between July 10 and September 1, 2026. Mowing will only be permitted at night and during the early morning hours.
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev announced that security teams would be deployed in high-risk fire zones and that drones would be used for early fire detection.
Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said helicopters, aircraft equipped with firefighting systems, and approximately 400 military personnel are on standby to support firefighting operations.
Abrovski also urged citizens and tourists to exercise greater caution in forested and rural areas, noting that a significant share of wildfires are caused by human negligence.
