French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the bill on the "right to access assisted dying" has been adopted.
Macron stated that on an issue concerning sensitive matters such as life, suffering, and dignity, the proper approach is to listen, engage in dialogue, and hold a broad public debate.
Recalling that he had pledged in 2022 to launch this process together with the French people, Macron said this commitment had been fulfilled with "seriousness, humility, and full respect for democracy."
Macron noted that the Constitutional Council would now review the bill in accordance with the principles of the rule of law, and thanked the members of parliament who contributed to the constructive and respectful debates.
He also said that the work of the Citizens' Convention, caregivers, associations, and the National Consultative Ethics Committee played an important role in shaping the evaluation process.
The French president further thanked all those who met with him to share their experiences, concerns, beliefs, and hopes, stating that their testimonies made a valuable contribution to the drafting of the legislation.
