EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas made assessments following her contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

Referring to the main topics of the conversation, Kallas said, "Today, I spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi about the situation in the Gulf and Russia's war against Ukraine, which Moscow has further intensified in recent days."

Drawing attention to the diplomatic opportunities regarding the situation in the Gulf region, Kallas stated, "A brief pause from the fighting in the Gulf could give mediators time to find a way back to diplomacy and prevent a return to full-scale war."

Reacting to the treatment of diplomatic representatives in Tehran, Kallas said, "I made it clear that the aggression against French diplomats in Tehran is unacceptable. All EU member states condemned these actions."

Emphasizing her support for direct contacts between Ukraine and Iran and steps to reduce regional tensions, Kallas stated, "It is encouraging that Andrii Sybiha spoke with Seyed Abbas Araghchi to de-escalate tensions. I am ready to support these efforts."

Reiterating her call for Iran to end its military support for Russia, Kallas said, "I reiterated my call for Iran to end its military support for Russia. Moscow is causing an increasing number of civilian casualties in Ukraine, and any material it receives helps it kill more civilians. Ukraine has the right to defend itself."
