Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei criticized the European Union’s (EU) support for economic sanctions against Iran.

Baqaei said the EU should not, under its own legislation, recognize the extraterritorial application of third countries’ laws, stating, “The European Union appears to be surrendering its sovereignty, its laws and regulations, its values and ethical principles to American pressure.”

Recalling that the EU adopted the Blocking Statute in 1996 to protect its sovereignty against the US sanctions regime, Baqaei said the current approach represents a significant departure from that policy.

Baqaei described the EU’s support for unilateral coercive measures against Iran as “a serious violation of international law” and said EU member states should be held accountable for the consequences of their contribution to this action.

The Iranian official also argued that the EU’s pursuit of de-escalation and regional stability on the one hand, while supporting US policies toward Iran on the other, is incompatible.
