Twenty-five members of the Media Freedom Coalition issued a joint statement on the safety of journalists and access to information in light of recent developments in the Middle East.

According to the joint statement shared by Belgium's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, independent journalism is critically important during conflicts because it provides affected communities with accurate and timely information. It was stated that journalists and media workers play an indispensable role in reporting developments from conflict zones to the world.

The joint statement expressed concern over the deaths, detentions and arrests of journalists in the region. It noted that many journalists and media workers had lost their lives during the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon since October 7, 2023, while journalists' access to conflict zones had become increasingly restricted.

The statement alleged that the Israeli government had prevented journalists from entering Gaza independently for more than two years, while Hamas had restricted journalists' ability to report freely through violence and pressure. It also drew attention to pressure on journalists in Iran and disruptions to internet access.

The coalition members condemned all forms of violence against journalists, media infrastructure, press facilities and media vehicles, calling for compliance with international humanitarian law and for journalists to be protected alongside civilians.

The statement also said that all attacks against journalists should be investigated under national and international law and that those responsible should be held accountable.
