Ukraine: UN tribunal rules Russia violated maritime law
Kyiv, June 15 (Hibya) - The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that an arbitration tribunal ruled against Russia in a case under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the arbitration tribunal has issued its ruling in the case filed against the Russian Federation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The statement noted that the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait are not a single country’s “Russian lake,” but are defined under international law as internal waters of both Ukraine and Russia.
It was also reported that the tribunal found Russia in breach of its obligations regarding environmental impact assessments and concluded that it had failed to meet its international responsibilities for the protection of the marine environment.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the ruling confirms the validity of international law.
