European Parliament President Roberta Metsola attended the celebrations in Lisbon marking the 40th anniversary of Portugal's accession to the European Union.

Metsola said, "I am honored to be in Lisbon today to celebrate Portugal's 40th anniversary in the European Union."

Noting that the celebrations took place at the Jerónimos Monastery, Metsola said, "There could be no more fitting place than the Jerónimos Monastery, which entered history with the signing of the Accession Treaty in 1985 and the Lisbon Treaty in 2007."

Highlighting Portugal's role within Europe, Metsola stated, "Over the past forty years, Portugal has helped shape Europe's direction and served as a bridge to the world."

Metsola concluded her message by saying, "To a new era and to keeping the European flag flying high."
