The VIX index, which is an indicator of market volatility, also rose 0.49 percent to 20.60.

In Europe, Germany’s DAX index fell 0.06 percent to 24,303.5 points, while the Euro Stoxx 50 index dropped 0.20 percent to 5,865 points. In Italy, the FTSE MIB index also declined 0.28 percent to 47,248 points.

By contrast, France’s CAC 40 index rose 0.06 percent to 8,176.5 points, while the U.K.’s FTSE 100 index gained 0.09 percent to 10,608.1 points.

Overall, no clear direction emerged in either U.S. or European markets, and a picture of limited gains and losses across the indexes drew attention.
