Guterres: Invest in climate adaptation today or pay the price of disaster tomorrow
Brussels, November 4 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the importance of adaptation efforts in addressing the climate crisis, warning that a lack of funding in this area threatens people's lives, livelihoods, and futures.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of adaptation efforts in tackling the climate crisis.
Referring to the latest Adaptation Gap Report published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Guterres stressed that there is a significant funding gap in climate adaptation. "Adaptation is about protecting people from the climate crisis today and investing in the shared security we will need tomorrow," Guterres said.
Noting that the existing gap cannot be measured solely in financial losses, Guterres stated, "This gap is measured not only in money, but also in lost lives, livelihoods, and futures." Guterres said that effective approaches to climate adaptation are already known, but funding and political will remain insufficient. "The choice is simple: Invest in adaptation today or pay the price of disaster tomorrow," he concluded.
