Belgium sends emergency aid to Moldova
Brussels, March 23 (Hibya) - Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced that emergency aid has been sent to Moldova following an oil spill in the Dniester River after Russian airstrikes.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prevot stated that, as part of emergency assistance to Moldova, equipment to respond to the oil spill was dispatched via the B-FAST mechanism.
Prevot noted that filter barriers and purification tanks were sent to the region to contain the oil spill in the Dniester River, emphasizing that the river is the main source of drinking water for Moldova.
Prevot stated that the spill occurred after Russian airstrikes targeting a hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine, adding: «We strongly condemn these attacks. This is the impact of war: it crosses borders, pollutes rivers, cuts off drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people, and turns an ecological disaster into a humanitarian emergency.»
Prevot emphasized that Moldova did not choose this situation but its people are paying the price, adding: «Belgium also continues to invest in long-term sustainable water solutions for Moldova, drawing on the expertise of Belgian companies.»
