Albares: PP is blocking the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty with France
Madrid, July 9 (Hibya) - Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares criticised the stance of the main opposition People's Party (PP) regarding the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty planned to be signed with France.
In a post on social media, Albares stressed the importance of the treaty for Spain's relations with France, saying: "The PP is boycotting the first Friendship and Cooperation Treaty with France. France is our friend and our largest trading partner."
Albares argued that the PP's position could negatively affect Spaniards living in France as well as the economic relationship between the two countries. He noted that around 330,000 Spanish citizens live in France, one million people engage in cross-border mobility, and annual exports between the two countries amount to 56 billion euros.
"This position runs counter to our place in Europe and our good neighbourly relations," Albares said.
Spain and France cooperate in many areas, particularly security, the economy and European affairs, and the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty is intended to provide a broader and more comprehensive framework for bilateral relations.
