Kazan, June 19 (Hibya) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone met on the sidelines of the Russia-ASEAN Summit in Kazan to discuss energy, nuclear cooperation, and economic relations.

Putin stated that Russia appreciates Laos' contributions to Russia-ASEAN cooperation and noted that relations between the two countries have deep historical roots dating back to the Soviet era. The Russian leader emphasized that Laos often shares similar positions with Moscow on international platforms and that the strategic partnership continues to strengthen.
During the meeting, attention was drawn to the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, while the approaching 15th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership Declaration was also noted.
The parties discussed enhancing cooperation in areas including energy, industry, agriculture, mining, the digital economy, banking, transportation, tourism, and education.
Putin stated that the agreement on peaceful nuclear energy cooperation signed with Laos provides the legal framework for the construction of a small-scale nuclear power plant.
The meeting also addressed Laos’ participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation as a dialogue partner and coordination between the two countries on international platforms.
Putin also referred to Laos’ decision to donate two elephants to Russia, describing the gesture as a symbol of the friendship between the two nations.
