European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas drew attention to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan at the international conference held in Berlin.

Kallas stated that in the third year of the ongoing war, the country is facing unprecedented levels of death, forced displacement, and poverty.

She noted that the conference addressed the revival of peace talks, increased humanitarian assistance, and the strengthening of civil society, describing donor countries’ additional commitment of €1.3 billion as “a positive development.”

Kallas emphasized that the EU’s proposal to protect critical infrastructure is an important step, adding that investigating war crimes and ensuring accountability must be part of a lasting solution.

She also stressed that the solution process in Sudan must be led by civilians, calling on regional actors to refrain from actions that fuel the conflict, and noted that the EU will continue to keep Sudan high on its agenda.
